Fielder Geotechnics – Connectivity Issues
The client were using another IT company that provided them with Internet connectivity, a VOIP phone system and general IT Support services.
The Problems
Fielders were experiencing a lot of connectivity issues which meant phones would drop offline and the internet would drop out. They would experience drops outs at least 3 or 4 times daily. Generally, you would assume that the reason the phones were dropping out was because the internet was dropping offline, but this didn’t appear to be the case because when phones were going offline, internet on computers still worked. Fielders had also found it difficult to get changes made to the phone system when the need arose.
Ultimately the current IT company were unable to get to the bottom of the connectivity problems and so Fielders reached out to us for help.
Our Solution
We went to the Fielders office to have a look at the setup and found several areas of concern.
- The router was around 10 years old and was the original unit supplied by the ISP. A new router was also present but not connected (why?)
- Wi-Fi was provided by the ISP’s router, giving poor coverage and security.
- The network switch was also a very old, basic 100mb switch, without gigabit ethernet or management capabilities.
Upon reporting back to Fielders our findings and solutions to move forward with, it was agreed that a new broadband connection would be needed, along with new cloud managed Ubiquiti gigabit switch and Wi-Fi access point. It was also agreed that the VOIP system would be replaced, once the new broadband connection and network equipment was in place and running.
A few weeks later broadband was installed with a managed router and the network was also replaced with the Ubiquiti equipment.
Feedback from the client after a week’s use was positive, with not one disconnection from either computer or phone.
A new cloud VOIP solution followed that allowed Fielders greater control with features they didn’t have before like Auto Attendants and Call Recording.
We now provide our Managed IT Service to Fielders to ensure everything we setup remained stable and secure. As part of this service, we remotely manage and monitor all of Fielders laptops and computers, ensuring they are fully patched and protected.
